Part of the Luau for One series: simple tropical moments for ordinary afternoons.
This summer, I’m creating tiny tropical celebrations at home through my Luau for One series. Simple drinks, easy snacks, and spontaneous little backyard moments that bring island air to ordinary days.
The first one happened on a Wednesday afternoon, I had just finished working on the Storybook Cottage, and wanted to relax with a refreshing drink in the shade of the hickory trees. So, I pulled out my Luau for One basket, which I had prepped for these moments, and spent a few minutes getting ready.

Luau for One Theme: Mango Coconut Cloud
I’m happy to share this luau for one idea with you. It all started with one of my favorite fruits, the mango, mixed with creamy, subtly sweet coconut. This blend is pure paradise in a glass. It is now one of my go-to smoothies when I want to have a mini vacation in the backyard.
The Beverage

This smooth, coconutty beverage is filled with tropical flavors, but no one flavor overpowers the others. It is a lovely blend that takes you to a dreamy island afternoon.
Snack

I kept it simple and filled a little bowl with
- macadamia nuts
- coconut chips
- and dried mangos
Tiny Details
This was a sweet moment on the backyard patio under the hickory trees. The trees created the shady afternoon atmosphere I wanted, with their leaves gently rustling and the cheerful songs of birds providing a perfect backdrop.
A well-loved acacia wood plate became the centerpiece for all my Luau for One parties. This cherished tray, which I bought over twenty-five years ago when we lived on Oahu, brings a bit of rustic charm, complementing the relaxed vibe of my outdoor space.
I added a white-and-yellow flower lei that echoes the colors of the ingredients in the Mango Coconut Cloud. It added just enough movement and color to the tray.
A little umbrella was the only drink embellishment I had, and that ended up being blown away by the wind. But there is always a little breeze on the islands, so an umbrella dancing in the air makes the moment feel more real.
I chose a smoothie straw, which looks a bit dramatic with the delicate umbrella and narrow glass, but this is not about perfect photos, just enjoying a cottage moment in the backyard.
Create This Luau for One Yourself
Ready to have a tranquil Luau for one? It takes only a few minutes to prepare.
The Props
- Acacia wood plate
- Acacia wood bowl
- Glass
- Straw (these are the ones I use, big enough for thick beverages)
- Drink umbrellas (I got mine from Hobby Lobby)
- Palm leaf (also from Hobby Lobby)
- Lei or a couple of tropical flowers
Note: The key to keeping these moments simple and stress-free is the Luau for One box or basket. If I didn’t have everything ready to go, I’d be less likely to have solo celebrations. So, I keep my props ready for spontaneous tropical cottage moments. And the ingredients in the pantry, fridge, or freezer…whatever is needed.
Mango Coconut Cloud Smoothie Recipe
I love that this beverage has no unusual ingredients, which makes it easy to prepare on the spur of the moment.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup frozen mango
- 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 1/3 cup frozen banana slices (about a 1/4 of an average-sized banana)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 2 tbsp Greek yogurt
- 1 tsp honey
- ice (optional)
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a blender.
- Blend until creamy and smooth.
Note: I made mine with 1/2 cup of ice, and it was really thick. I could have eaten it with a spoon, but it melted a bit while I took pictures, chased after, and replaced the drink decor the wind had blown away.
Snack Bowl
- macadamia nuts
- coconut chips
- dried mango

A Storybook Note
It was such a fun afternoon break, enjoying a delicious tropical smoothie, listening to the birds, chasing after a drink umbrella…
