The Story Behind the Summer In Bloom

Summer In Bloom is about the feeling after a walk through a rose garden and carrying a few freshly gathered blossoms indoors, placing them in a favorite vase, and letting their fragrance and color fill the space.

I’m not trying to recreate a garden in the Rose Parlour, but a space that reflects the peaceful moment that follows wandering through it. Soft blush roses, creamy petals, silvery eucalyptus, delicate butterflies, and familiar cottage treasures capture the feeling of summer settling inside the home. It’s romantic but simple enough to enjoy every ordinary day throughout the season.

Why “Rose Parlour”?

I call this room The Rose Parlour because it is the heart of our home. The walls are painted Romantic Rose, and fresh or faux roses often find their way onto the sideboard. The room carries a warmth that feels both welcoming and cozy elegant. “Living room” describes its purpose, but “parlour” describes its atmosphere. It is a place to gather, linger, read, welcome family, and enjoy the ordinary moments that make a house feel like home.

The Rose Parlour Summer Color Palette

Since Summer In Bloom is about blossoms bringing the summer into the home, the color palette was developed to reflect that. Soft pinks, cream, and silvery sage create a romantic, peaceful, storybook living room without making it look like a garden.

Summer Decorating the Credenza

I enjoy slow decorating, watching the seasons gently change in our home. To make it easy, this past year, the foundation has stayed the same; it’s the seasonal items that tell the next chapter of the Rose Parlour’s story.

Bringing the Garden Indoors

The summer story includes roses. While fresh roses would be ideal, these lovely petal-pink and blush roses in a soft pink glass vase capture the atmosphere well. I also tucked in a couple of silvery eucalyptus branches for additional lushness and height. The romantic swirled vase is one of my favorites and a regular styling piece in the Rose Parlour.

Nestled next to the vase, a whimsical butterfly has landed to take in the surroundings before continuing its adventures.

The right side of the console feels a little lighter, like a fresh summer morning. The vignette on a little blush doily with lace detail adds the needed balance to the sideboard.

Unlike in the spring, there are no main characters here in the summer; the three decorative elements sweetly work together. When you light the candle, the glass cloche catches the glow while holding a seasonal item, a blush blossom, tucked under the dome. And the fluffy blossom in the sugarbowl further softens the scene.

The Little Stories Around the Rose Parlour

The Garden-Inspired Throw Pillows

The Rose Parlour’s pillows stay the same throughout the spring and summer. The seasonal items around the room bring in the new atmosphere.

I keep a cozy throw draped over the back of the couch to provide a neutral backdrop for the garden-themed pillows, which vary in color and texture.

Lamb’s Ear Wreath in the Summer

This lamb’s ear wreath stays in the living room through spring, summer, and autumn. It is part of the room’s ongoing story. Its silvery sage foliage and charming spoon-shaped leaves create a lush base for seasonal changes. For the summer and spring, it wears an ivory crinkle chiffon ribbon, tucked in the leaves on one side.

If you pay close attention, you’ll also see a butterfly resting on the bow, blending into the wreath. The butterfly is one of those little storybook elements I like to include when styling our home.

The Rose Parlour’s Signature Frame

The Rose Parlour’s signature framed art usually sits on the credenza nestled by the swirly pink vase, but this summer, it found a place across the room next to a soft pink cottage-core pitcher.

The Sentimental Art Corner

Across the room from the sideboard is a little stool acting as a stand for artwork. I like to display here paintings that have sentimental value, whether or not they match the Rose Parlour’s garden vibes. Right now, this lovely beach scene painted by my middle daughter fills the space with relaxing tropical vibes. The colors in the painting go surprisingly well with the room.

Pooky Gets His Summer Ribbon

Next to the art corner is Pooky, the Rose Parlour Bear, watching the life unfold and happily joining my granddaughter in an occasional wrestling match.

A few times a year, Pooky gets a new ribbon that reflects the current season and atmosphere of the room.

Cozy Reading Nook

An oversized chair by the window waits for someone to curl up with a book. This corner in the living room is one of my favorite places to drift into the fantasy worlds. The dusty rose pillow and a sage green throw blanket draped over the back of the armchair ensure my slow cottage moments are cozy and warm.

Creating Storybook Atmosphere One Season at a Time

To create this gathered summer garden feeling, begin with the pieces that already make your home feel like yours. Layer in florals, greenery, seasonal linen, and a touch of whimsy without changing everything. A few thoughtful details can suggest an entire story, leaving room for the imagination to wander.
